Print newspapers from national and local outlets (week of January 23, 2023), hand-painted messages, installation space at Northwestern’s San Francisco campus
Description
Information Overload was created using print newspapers sourced from a San Francisco library, installed in a small nook at Northwestern’s SF campus. The piece is immersive, with newspapers covering the walls and hand-painted messages filling the space, evoking a physical reaction of claustrophobia. Made in the aftermath of the 2023 Monterey Park Lunar New Year shooting, the piece responds to the overwhelming flood of coverage and commentary, reflecting the desensitization that follows.
By using print newspapers, I emphasize that information overload extends beyond the digital space, spilling into physical spaces and affecting how we engage with the world. As artifacts of our shared experience, these newspapers highlight how the overwhelming flood of news and opinions compounds our struggle to process, prioritize, and engage with the world around us.
